Ms Anezka - How she overcame a thyroid tumor thanks to a precise oncological approach!

Sixty-two-year-old Anezka's prognosis was not good at first. The thyroid tumor had infiltrated the surrounding vascular structures and metastasized to the lungs. It was also an aggressive subtype that could not be treated with radioiodine. Treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy shrank the tumor, but unfortunately, not enough, and the standard treatment options were gradually exhausted.

As a solution, she was offered the possibility of a precision oncology approach at the Centre for Precision Medicine of the University Hospital Brno. Based on molecular genetic testing of the tumor and consultation with the Molecular Oncology Indication Committee, she was started on anti-tumor immunotherapy. During treatment, the lung metastases disappeared, and the tumor shrank significantly, allowing its complete surgical removal. According to doctor Michal Eid, who participated in Ms Anezka's treatment at the Centre for Precision Medicine of the University Hospital Brno, the tumor regressed completely. Our experienced pathologist found only islands of tumor cells in the removed organ. This indicates an absolutely perfect effect of immunotherapy in a specific patient with a specific disease and a specific biomarker that predicts a good benefit from the chosen treatment. Ms. Anezka is now 2 years post-surgery, under observation only, and is in good health.
