A second chance thanks to immunotherapy that opened a new path

What initially appeared to be minor health issues quickly escalated. The situation changed dramatically when the patient experienced several hours of urinary retention – a warning sign that could no longer be ignored. He underwent an examination at the Urology Department of the University Hospital Brno (FN Brno), where he was immediately hospitalized. Doctors inserted nephrostomy tubes into both kidneys and began a series of examinations. The diagnosis was clear and severe: locally advanced bladder cancer. In August 2022, he underwent major surgery, which led to the permanent placement of a colostomy and urostomy – life-altering changes that had a profound physical and psychological impact on his daily life.

Unfortunately, the chemotherapy that followed did not produce the desired results – new metastases appeared and continued to spread. A crucial turning point came after a thorough genetic analysis of tissue samples, which enabled the start of immunotherapy. It was this modern treatment that marked a major breakthrough. In June 2023, the patient received life-changing news from his attending physician, Dr. Michal Eid – a CT scan showed that the disease was progressing favorably, and the metastatic lesions were shrinking or disappearing. Treatment continued until November 2024, with follow-up tests consistently confirming its positive effects. The patient is now under regular monitoring, with no active treatment being administered.

This difficult period was made more bearable thanks to the strong support of his family – especially his wife, children, and close friends. The medical team across departments at FN Brno also played a key role; their professional and compassionate approach helped the patient through some of the hardest moments. The serious illness significantly affected his professional life as well. Losing his job unexpectedly brought a new sense of purpose – he was able to fully dedicate himself to caring for his son with a severe disability and re-evaluate his life priorities. In his own words:
"In the end, all the bad led me to what truly matters. Every new day is a gift – and real values are much simpler than we tend to think."

From his personal experience, he sends this message to others going through similarly challenging times:
"Don’t give up. Faith and the will to heal can do more than we imagine."
